Florida Conversations Explores Environmental ‘Insanity’

The Tampa Bay History Center welcomes award-winning St. Petersburg Times environmental reporter Craig Pittman to the Florida Conversations Lecture Series on Sunday, April 17, at 3:00 p.m. Pittman will discuss his latest book, Manatee Insanity: Inside the War Over Florida's Most Famous Endangered Species. A three-time Waldo Proffitt Award winner for Distinguished Environmental Journalism in Florida, Pittman's investigative reporting has exposed flaws and corruption in Florida's regulation of sensitive wetlands and water resources. Florida Conversations explores Spanish Florida

The History Center will welcomes USF J. Michael Francis St. Petersburg professor J. Michael Francisto the Florida Conversations Lecture Series on Thursday, April 11 at 6:30 p.m. One of the nation's leading experts on the Spanish colonial experience in Florida, Francis joined the USF St Petersburg faculty just as Florida began to mark the arrival of Ponce de Léon 500 years ago this year. The Great Caper: Photo Safari

It’s a jungle out there… a concrete one! Grab your camera, binoculars and smart phone for a trek through Tampa’s urban treasures. The photo safari starts with a scavenger hunt through the History Center’s galleries. After that, you’ll hop on and off the TECO Streetcar line in search of history, mystery and storied landmarks throughout downtown Tampa. Sangria & Stories: Treasured Maps

Sip some sangria and participate in a lively gallery discussion with Tom Touchton, a map collector and TBHC founding board chairman. More than 100 of Mr. Touchton's maps are on display in Charting the Land of Flowers, our one-of-a-kind exhibition of Florida maps. Touchton will share stories about his personal favorites during this up-close gallery talk. $10 for members; $15 for non-members. Fee includes one glass of sangria and free garage parking.
