Florida Conversations explores Spanish Florida

St. Petersburg professor J. Michael Francisto the Florida Conversations Lecture Series on Thursday, April 11 at 6:30 p.m.

One of the nation’s leading experts on the Spanish colonial experience in Florida, Francis joined the USF St Petersburg faculty just as Florida began to mark the arrival of Ponce de Léon 500 years ago this year.

Francis’ current work includes the digitization of thousands of documents from the city of St. Augustine, some dating back to 1594.

His talk, Colonial Martyrs: Franciscans, Indians and the Spiritual Conquest of Florida, will focus on Catholic missions in 16th and 17th-century Florida.
