Initially called the Central Tampa Greenspace Initiative, the Green ARTery is a central Tampa neighborhood-based effort to work with the public and private sectors and neighborhood communities to identify and safely connect, enhance and expand pedestrian, wheelchair and bike paths, parks, Greenways and trail systems. Central Tampa Greenspace Initiative started in August of 2010 by two neighborhoods, Old Seminole Heights and Tampa Heights, who determined that they had many like interests and had the desire to join forces to achieve the same goals.  Within a very short time the two grew to twenty neighborhoods as others learned about the initiative and determined that they also had the same goals, wanted to be a part of the growing consolidated effort and recognized that together the they become a stronger force.  Today, this twenty-neighborhood model covers approximately twenty square miles within the city of Tampa.  Its boundaries are the “blueways ribbon” of McKay and Old Tampa Bay on the south and the Hillsborough River on the west and north and the newly improved north section of 40th Street continuing to connect to McKay Bay on the east.

It is envisioned that the Green Artery will eventually become an economic revenue and stimulus to Tampa and Hillsborough County similar to the benefits and impact that the Pinellas Trail is to Pinellas County.  The Pinellas Trail’s economic impact is second only to their beaches in that area.  It is known and recognized nationally and internally and it is a large component of the county’s marketing effort and focused resources.
