It’s easy to fall in love with an old house. One look at their high ceilings, built in cabinets, large windows and deep porches set along grand tree lined streets and your heart is sold. Unfortunately, it’s not as easy to know what to do when the house you fell in love with is in need of repair. To help smitten old house lovers, Tampa Preservation, Inc. is once again offering a one day Historic Homes Workshop to connect homeowners to experts who will share their knowledge of historic home renovation.

The theme for this year’s workshop is Maintaining the Old House with a focus on preventing future costly repairs.  With twelve workshops offered, maintenance topics will include Restoring Wood Windows, Foundation and Roof Repair, Appropriate Exterior Details as well as interior renovation topics such as Remodeling a Period Bath. A highlight this year will be a special workshop at Schiller’s Architectural Salvage on Incorporating Salvaged Materials in Home Decor. Admission to the workshop is free for Tampa Preservation, Inc. members and $5 for non-members. Lunch will be available for Workshop participants to purchase.

“We get a lot of calls at the TPI office for homeowners looking for professionals to help them with their historic homes from design issues to contractors to do the work,” observes Becky Clarke, TPI President. “This event will showcase local experts who will share their knowledge and hopefully give away some of their industry secrets.” In addition to the Workshops, a vendor display area will allow homeowners to meet and discuss their home projects with preservation-related businesses such as Through the Woods Fine Wood Floors (wood floor repair and refinishing), Wood Window Makeover (historic window repair) and Historic Shed (custom sheds for historic homes).

    Thanks for that, Okay, my husband is a contractor who has totally remodeled this old house we live in. It’s 100+ years old and used to be a boarding house in the old days. He made his own hardwood flooring from oak and put it in this house (the original hardwood flooring was worn thin and broken up). We have a complete privacy fence around nearly an acre. A garage separate from the house. My husband’s workshop/garage is also a separate building. A concrete parking lot in the back for his work-vehicles. Central heat & air units and gas heat as well. 8 fireplaces, six bedrooms. New windows, roof, and siding. He says our property is worth close to 200,000, but I’m not so sure. We live in a very rural area where property value is low (an hour from any town in any direction we go). So how do I go about figuring how much this place is really worth? There is not a single house around here that I can compare this place to, all the other old historic homes were pretty much abandoned and left to rot.
