VM Ybor Historic Home Tour 2017

On Sunday, October 29 from 12noon – 4pm, the V.M. Ybor Neighborhood Association will host its Seventh Home Tour.  The V.M. Ybor neighborhood was named for Vicente Martinez Ybor, the Spanish founder of Ybor City’s Cigar Industry. A true gem tucked just north of Ybor City and minutes from downtown Tampa.

This “not so typical” home tour features the eclectic, diverse and historic V.M. Ybor community.  The event features 8 unique homes, Cuscaden Pool, and a mural-filled Service Station turned live-work space.  While many homes have been restored or remodeled, they all still contain original elements that characterize the community. The self-guided tour will begin from Cuscaden Pool (2900 N. 15th Street), where guests will receive neighborhood maps and information on each of the featured properties.

City of Tampa Property at 1713 Columbus Drive – Available for sale

The City of Tampa has listed a property at 1713 E. Columbus Drive, with a relocated historic home, for sale and renovation within the Ybor City/ Barrio Latino Historic District.

The Advertisement, Proposal Form and Land Sales Agreement, necessary to Bid on the Request for Proposal, are available at the City of Tampa’s website:  www.tampagov.net/real-estate.

There will also be an open house available to view a portion of the house on Friday, October 13th, 2017 from 9 am – 12 noon.

Upcoming Ybor City Museum Events

YborMuseumOctober 20, 2016, 5:30 – 8:00 p.m., Ybor City Museum State Park:  Opening celebration with food, beverages and music for a special exhibit on Cuba’s role in shaping Tampa’s cultural heritage. There is no admission fee for this event, however please register if you plan to attend.

October 21, 2016, 5:30 – 8:00 p.m., Cuban Club:  The Cuba-Tampa Baseball Connection. A presentation by Dr. Robert González Echevarría, Yale University Sterling Professor of Hispanic and Comparative Literatures and Author of The Pride of Havana: A History of Cuban Baseball and Cuban Fiestas. Introduction by The Honorable E.J. Salcines. Reception from 5:30 – 6:15. Presented in collaboration with the Cuban Club. There is no admission fee for this event, however please register if you plan to attend.

VM Ybor Historic Home Tour 2015

On Sunday, October 25th from 12 noon – 4 pm, the V.M. Ybor Neighborhood Association will host its Sixth Annual Home Tour. The V.M. Ybor neighborhood was named for Vicente Martinez Ybor, the Spanish founder of Ybor City’s Cigar Industry. A true gem tucked just north of Ybor City and minutes from downtown Tampa.

This “not so typical” home tour features the eclectic, diverse and historic V.M. Ybor community. With 8 unique homes, Ybor’s last operating cigar factory, and a 200 square foot “tiny house”, the tour will be sure to please local Tampa residents, historians, and visitors alike. While many homes have been restored or remodeled, they all still contain original elements that characterize our unique community. The self-guided tour will begin from the J.C. Newman Cigar Factory (2701 N. 16th Street), where guests will receive neighborhood maps and information on each of the featured properties.

As a Bonus

Attendees will be able to learn about wood window repair directly from master craftsman Steve Quillian, owner of Wood Window Makeover. He will be demonstrating key steps to rehabilitating wood windows at one of the featured homes. Steve is a recognized expert and master craftsman, completing preservation projects as far west as Texas and as far north as Kentucky.

City Council Seek Applications For Citizens Boards and Commissions

TampaCityHallThe members of the City Council of the City of Tampa are seeking citizens to serve on several City of Tampa Boards, Commissions, and Advisory Councils/Commissions.

Citizens interested in seeking appointment must be residents and registered voters in the City of Tampa. However, there are several Boards, Commissions, and Advisory Councils/Commission that do not require citizens to be residents and registered voters of the City of Tampa. These positions are voluntary. Individuals being appointed to serve on these Boards, Commissions, and Advisory Councils/Commissions serve without compensation. Individuals being appointed may be required to file financial disclosure.

The deadline for submission of applications is 5:00 p.m. on Friday-March 5, 2015 in the Office of the City Clerk, Old City Hall, 315 East Kennedy Boulevard, Tampa, Florida.

The following historic preservation board positions are open:

ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW COMMISSION:

Purpose: Authority to hear/grant variances in historic districts or landmark sites designated by the Commission (except those areas under the jurisdiction of the Barrio Latino Commission) from the terms and regulations of the zoning chapter relative to yard (setback), fence and buffer regulations, height structures in certain residential districts, signs, etc. The ordinance that created this Commission was designed to protect historically significant buildings and landmarks within the City limits.

  • Term of Office: Three Years
  • Special Requirements:
    • Council appoints 3 members and 1 alternate. – (Special Requirements: Members and alternate members shall have a demonstrated interest, competence, professional experience or knowledge in architecture, historic preservation, history, architectural history, planning, archaeology, development, real estate appraisals, real estate marketing, law or other related disciplines.
    • Oath of Office Requirement: Yes
    • Residency Requirement: Yes – (All appointees shall be residents of the City of Tampa.)
    • Financial Disclosure Requirement: Yes
  • Members shall not serve more than two consecutive full terms
  • One (1) Position – Due to Resignation – Member – Term expires December 6, 2015

BARRIO LATINO COMMISSION:

Purpose: The Barrio Latino Commission has the responsibility of preserving the historic fabric of the District and maintaining its architectural integrity.  The Ybor City Historic District has many character defining features:  pedestrian scale, mixed-use main streets, as well as its unique structures such as the Social Clubs and Cigar Factory buildings.  The Barrio Latino Commission balances the historic past with the growth of the present prosperity.

  • Term of Office: Three Years

  • City Council appoints three (3) members and one alternate (1) appointed by City Council.

  • Special Requirements:

    • Members and alternate members shall have a demonstrated interest, competence, professional experience or knowledge in architecture, historic preservation, history, architectural history, planning, archaeology, development, real estate appraisals, real estate marketing, law or other related disciplines.
    •  In appointing members, the Mayor and City Council shall include, to the extent that such individuals are available in the community and will to serve, two (2) registered architects, individuals with demonstrated experience in historic preservation, architecture, architectural history, archaeology, landscape architecture or urban design, building construction or real estate, and individuals who reside in or operate a business in the Ybor City Historic District.
    • Oath of Office Requirement: Yes
    • Financial Disclosure Requirement: Yes
  • Members shall not serve more than two consecutive full terms

  • 1 Position – Resident or operate a business in the Ybor City Historic District – Term expired on November 6, 2014

  • 1 Position – Alternate – Term expired on January 24, 2015

2014 TPI Preservation Celebration Awards

The 2014 Preservation Awards saluted an amazing array of projects from homes to bridges to publications. TPI is delighted to recognize these amazing projects and is already looking forward to next year’s winners. The awards were presented on October 30, 2014 at the Seminole Heights Garden Center.
